GRG cornice for Ealing Filmworks
Posted on 5th August 2020
Filmworks is a collection of art-deco inspired 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments in the West London location of Ealing. Providing a total of over 200 homes, Filmworks also includes an eight screen cinema and central piazza surrounded by a mix of retail shops, restaurants and bars.
The project preserves the art deco façade of the old Empire Cinema on Ealing Broadway. This building originally opened in April 1934 as The Ealing Forum Theatre, was renamed ABC Cinema in 1961 and has undergone many name changes since then (Cannon, MGM, ABC, UGC, and Cineworld, Empire).
Design and Visual Concepts (DVC) has provided 2100 linear metres of plain GRG cornice with a stepped profile for the decoration of ceilings in selected apartments. The custom cornice design included the manufacture of a bespoke fibreglass mould.
Glass Reinforced Gypsum (GRG) is ideal for creating internal decorative features such as plain cornice as it is lightweight and strong, easy to dress or paint, and is manufactured off-site thus can be ready to fit as the project progresses.
DVC was appointed for Ealing Filmworks by BDL Group on behalf of the main contractor for the project, St. George, who are part of the Berkeley Group – London’s leading mixed-use developer.
